This year’s fall in the southeast did not disappoint! Colors of crimson, auburn and brick drench the hillsides of the Blue Ridge mountains.
This was my first time experiencing the change of seasons in the eastern US and what an experience it was!
Once escaping the noise and concrete of the city in Knoxville, route 129 takes you south into a paradise of breathtaking vistas and miles of some of the most scenic views in all of the Appalachians.
It doesn’t take long before you arrive into a forest that is never ending. The warm fall afternoons invite a host of motorcycles and sports cars who enjoy the open mountain air.
With plenty of pull-outs and view sites, there is something for everyone to marvel.
As the October nights become longer and the cool temperatures arrive, the trees are preparing for their dormant season.
And we get to enjoy the loads of carotenoids and anthocyanins which gives us the fall palette of bronzes, reds and golds.
Route 129, also called The Tail of the Dragon, beckons speed enthusiasts from all over the country.
They come to enjoy the 318 curves over the 11 mile stretch of road. With no intersecting roads or driveways, the tail is sure to not disappoint!
If you are not sure when to plan your fall trip to the east, you can check the following fall foliage prediction map link ~ https://smokymountains.com/fall-foliage-map/
With trails strewn all about the Smoky’s, you can delight in hikes, picnics, even boat and train tours, or simply drive through the terrain to take in the majestic fall colors.
One tip I should be sure to mention, if you do happen upon the Appalachian trail itself, plan to bring with you and leave behind any snacks or treats to donate to the hikers who pass along the path daily from Spring until Winter.
There’s no better time a year to enjoy the Great Smoky mountains then in the month of October.
I hope to see you there!!
